Alex vs Liverpool

16 May 2013

McCarthy against Reds

With Alex McCarthy being called up to the full England squad, it's a good time to recall his sensational performance against Liverpool earlier this season.

He made countless amazing saves against the Reds, with Brendan Rodgers calling it one of the best displays he'd ever seen by a goalkeeper.

With Roy Hodgson in the crowd, McCarthy was simply unstoppable, and our boss Nigel Adkins said, "Some of the saves were world class.

"I always say the goalkeeper is the most important player in the team, maybe because of my own background. But today it was underlined.

"He's a young English goalkeeper and I know he's got a bright future. We've kept a clean-sheet because Alex has pulled off some fantastic saves. But the players have worked very hard as a unit as well today."

Rodgers added, "I can't remember being at a game where a goalkeeper has performed like that, either as a manager, coach or spectator. He was brilliant.

"Sometimes you have days where the keeper makes one or two good saves, but we had 14 shots on target.

"I can see him playing for England, there's no question about that."

"I know Alex well. He's genuinely going to be a top, top keeper and to perform like that having been out for so long was absolutely staggering."
