Boss: Alex call fantastic

Adkins on McCarthy's England involvement

Manager Nigel Adkins says Alex McCarthy's presence in the full England squad is a major boost for Reading Football Club.

Nigel has worked with the 23-year-old since the end of March, giving him his chance in the first team and seeing him show undoubted potential between the sticks.

Alex fully deserves his call-up, and the boss said it simply highlights the good work going on in our Academy, commenting, "It’s fantastic for Reading Football Club. He’s the first player to come through the Academy to be called up to play for England, and Alex has done magnificently to achieve that.

"To be called up for England at any stage is fantastic, but to come through the youth system here is great testament to all the hard work Alex has put in and all the work that has gone on here at Reading."

Nigel was also keen to pay tribute to McCarthy's recovery from his shoulder injury, saying, "Playing in goal is a mentally challenging position, especially if you've been out four or five months, you have to overcome that and be strong. At a tender age Alex has had a lot of support but credit to him for doing the business.

"Sal the goalkeeping coach and Luke the physiotherapist have obviously helped a lot this season; Alex has been out with a shoulder injury for a large period. But ultimately the player has to go and do it, so great credit to Alex

"There’s been good support for Alex, this is a good football club. The structure we have enables players to recover from injury, to develop as players and as human beings, it’s a good place to be."

And the success of our Academy continues to go from strength to strength. "The under 18s getting to the final of the Elite Group this year, it’s fantastic for Reading Football Club and the future is looking really bright.

"In everything you’re just looking for progression. It’s been highlighted that in the last eight or nine years, it’s been the most successful time in the club’s history. We are one of the oldest clubs in the country and look at the progression that’s gone on.

"The infrastructure is building, the philosophies are building, we’ve got a great Academy, all being well it will be category one, I’ve mentioned getting to the final of the Elite League and it just shows with a one-time youth team player now in the England ranks."
