Dolan on Alex call-up

Eamonn delighted for 'keeper

Academy Manager Eamonn Dolan is delighted for goalkeeper Alex McCarthy after the youngster's first call-up to the full England squad.

Dolan has known Alex right through his formative years in our youth setup, and this is a proud moment for anyone connected to the club, and in particular to anyone in our Academy.

Eamonn told, "For Alex to make the England squad and to hopefully get a cap will be thrilling for him. Credit goes to Sal Bibbo, Colin Barnes, Steve Smith, Alex’s father and many others who have worked with him and helped shape him into the top class player he is, they will all be delighted.

"Reading has an impressive pedigree of producing international talent; Gylfi, Simon Cox, Churchy, Hal and Alex Pearce have all represented their country and it’s gratifying to see the club still has the ability to spot and nurture those players. England is a top name in world football and for Alex to be called up to play for his country is a great honour.

"It’s not surprising considering the quality of people working in the Academy. Brendan Rodgers, Nick Hammond and Brian McDermott have laid the foundations and the visionary leadership of Chairman Sir John Madejski have all helped to shape the club’s academy into what it is today under Anton.

"Nigel Adkins has given him a real chance in recent weeks and his assistant Andy Crosby has played a big part in that too, the assistant at any football club is important and they both deserve a lot of credit.

"The function of the Academy is to produce players for the first team and it has proved that over time Reading FC is capable of doing so. That is the ambition of the club and it’s due to the hard work of many people, often who go unnoticed, so it’s very satisfying for a lot of people.

"It’s great to have pressure on us to produce players of this calibre and then to see them get rewarded like this, it’s fantastic. It means we keep pushing to bring forward players such as Alex."
