Hal: Our Academy surge

30 May 2013

Robson-Kanu lauds McCarthy

Form-wise, Alex McCarthy may well be the best English goalkeeper right now - according to a fellow Royals Academy graduate who has shone on the international stage, Hal Robson-Kanu.

McCarthy was an unused substitute during Wednesday night's 1-1 friendly draw with Ireland at Wembley, and Hal says it's a proud moment for Alex to be involved on the international stage with England and shows the progression the club has made.

"Having come from the Academy with Alex, it’s no surprise to me that he’s been called up," Robson-Kanu said.

"I think that was only a matter of time, especially with his performances this season. But obviously it’s a massive, massive moment for the club and a proud moment for Alex himself. It shows how far the club has come."

"Al’s a cool customer and he gives that vibe off to other people. So I wouldn't be nervous at all watching him play. The way he's been playing recently, he’s probably the best goalkeeper for England at the minute."

Robson-Kanu, who scored his first goal for Wales in March against Scotland at Hampden Park, added that it's fantastic to see yet another Academy graduate receive international acclaim - as it provides inspiration for the youngsters coming through.

"That’s stems through the whole club, the chairman, the owner - they really believe in the system and the fruits of it are really coming to fruition," he said.

"So it's fantastic – fantastic for the club, fantastic for the boys coming through – because they see the likes of me, McCarthy, Pearce, Jem, people who have left like Gylfi and Shane Long, really given the opportunity and taking it."
