"He deserves it"

Hodgson on McCarthy & Madejski Stadium clash

England manager Roy Hodgson believes that Alex McCarthy fully deserves his Three Lions call up.

The Royals Academy product received plenty of media attention as the news of the squad broke on Thursday afternoon, and Hodgson told a packed press conference he had no hesitation in giving the 23-year-old his chance.

"He deserves it as he has been doing really well," he said.

"This will be a good chance to bring him in and to see how he copes with being in a senior squad. He's been playing well in the games I saw and from the reports I've had - I haven't had a chance to speak to him but we made the decision quite a few days ago. I hope he is very happy and I am hoping to spend some time with him when we meet up. It's important for these young guys to show what they can do."

On a more light hearted note, England's boss has also looked forward to an intriguing clash at Madejski Stadium on Saturday afternoon - where he will manage a squad of selected stars against a team representing the Army FA.

"It’ll be great to see all these legends and past stars coming out and playing, you’ll still see some wonderful touches and wonderful things from them. It's a fantastic occasion celebrating the Army FA's anniversary and it’s great that these two are getting together."
