McCarthy waits for debut, Kelly plays 90
may have to wait a little longer to make his international debut, but Royals defender Stephen Kelly
played the full 90 minutes last night as the Republic of Ireland earned a 1-1 draw with England at Wembley.
Kelly had a solid night at left back - where he has been playing for Reading under Nigel Adkins - and kept pacy winger Theo Walcott relatively quiet and rarely allowed the Arsenal man to get the better of him. Former Royals Shane Long scored the opening goal, while Academy graduate Simon Cox also featured late on.
Roy Hodgson's England have a friendly against Brazil on Sunday night at the Maracana Stadium, and McCarthy will be hoping to for any kind of involvement in this spectacular stadium. Interestingly, the last Royal to make his first appearance for England - Nicky Shorey - debuted against Brazil!
Young goalkeeper Jon Henly also featured last night for Scotland U19s, but they were defeated 3-0 by a dominant England side. Henly was the outstanding performer for the Scots though - he got down well to deny Chelsea's Lewis Baker from a free kick and made another reflex save from Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom's shot.
Garath McCleary, Jobi McAnuff,Adrian Mariappa and Shaun Cummings (provisional) received call-ups for Jamaica, and they'll be hoping to help the Reggae Boyz to a friendly victory over Bahamas - as preparation for their imminent World Cup Qualifiers against Mexico, USA and Honduras. Kaspars Gorkss' Latvia also have a 2014 World Cup qualifier around the corner - against Bosnia-Hercegovina on Friday 7th June.
Lastly but not least, young Irish defenders Pierce Sweeney, Shane Griffin and Sean Long are all set to be involved in the UEFA U19 Championships Elite Round in Serbia this week.
