Kelly's eye on Alex

29 May 2013

Duo could feature tonight

Defender Stephen Kelly could come face-to-face with Alex McCarthy this evening, and the Irishman says our goalkeeper deserves to be on the international stage.

Alex has been sensational in the latter part of the season, and his defensive teammate was very pleased to hear of his inclusion.

He told readingfc.co.uk, "I was delighted for Alex, he’s been playing really well of late and it shows how hard he’s worked since his injury.

"He deserved the call-up, I’m sure he’ll do well and hopefully get a cap, fingers crossed for him."

Asked if he would give the youngster any advice while on England duty, Stephen commented, "All I’d say to him is treat it like it’s your club, don’t do anything different, it’s the same for any young player, club or country.

"Be yourself, take confidence from how you’ve played here, believe you’re good enough to be there."

Looking ahead to tonight's match he said, "'The England game should be good, it’s the first time I’ve played them in an international.

It always means a lot so it’s a huge game and we want a result. It’ll be tough going to Wembley but we’re looking forward to it."
