McCarthy in England squad

16 May 2013

Goalkeeper called up

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has been called into the England squad for the first time and becomes the first Reading FC youth player called up by our nation in the Academy era.

McCarthy has been in sensational form in the latter part of this season, with his performances and saves rightly described as world class. He was also second in our player of the season vote this year as fans recognised his talent and ability to develop even further in the future.

The club would like to congratulate the 23-year-old on being called up, and with him coming through our Academy ranks it makes his achievement even more special.

Roy Hodgson's men face Ireland at Wembley on May 29th and then an incredible game away to Brazil in Rio's Maracana stadium on June 2nd.

Hogdson said, "This will be a good chance to bring him in and to see how he copes with being in a senior squad. He's been playing well in the games I saw and from the reports I've had. He deserves it as he has been doing really well. I haven't had a chance to speak to him but we made the decision quite a few days ago. I hope he is very happy and I am hoping to spend some time with him when we meet up. It's important for these young guys to show what they can do."
