Nigel's clean sheet aim

21 May 2013

Boss speaks after 4-2 loss

After conceding four goals in our final Barclays Premier League game of the season, boss Nigel Adkins set out his defensive target for the Football League next season.

£35million England man Andy Carroll was superb for the Hammers on Sunday, but regardless of opposition the boss wants to see an improvement at the back.

He said, "We can’t concede goals as cheaply next season, we conceded four bad ones from our perspective. Going forward that is something we need to address. We need 21 clean sheets in the Championship next season.

"We’ve come a heck of a long way in a short space of time, there’s been a transformation which is clear to see, but it’s about what you do in both boxes, defending at one end and the right decisions & creating chances in the attacking third.

"The character has been really good, we’ve got players who know the Championship and its demands. Having sampled the Premier League we want to be back quickly, it’s a challenge but one we look forward to with hunger.

"I’ve loved every minute of it in the Premier League, it’s where I want to ply my trade and I’ve got a great opportunity being at Reading Football Club where we can work very hard next season with desire to get back.

"We’re looking to have more control over games and it takes a period of time to get that. But there’s a feelgood factor, which is important."
