Adkins: "No Complacency"

1 November 2013

Manager on Hillsborough visit

Nigel Adkins was quizzed in his pre-match press conference as to whether his side could underestimate Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough this weekend. His response was unequivocal.

“There’s definitely no complacency,” he said. “Our players believe that they have to work hard. We know that going up to Hillsborough is going to be a competitive game, a challenging game.

“What a history they have at Sheffield Wednesday, it’s a superb stadium, a big pitch, and wherever they may sit at this moment in time in the division they’ve got good players and they’ve got an excellent manager. They have had a lot of draws this season, for whatever reason – and if those draws had been turned into victories they could be right at the very top of the division. Complacency is not a word we’re prepared to even contemplate.”

The manager also gave an interesting insight into the level of detail built into his squad’s weekly training schedule, and is determined to ensure they have all the correct tools to get a positive result at the weekend.

“You don’t just go and do an hour's worth of running round on the football pitch, there’s lots of interaction – communication is important. It’s a good culture that we’ve got here at the football club, we want to keep building on that. We debriefed the game in the morning – we have a strength session going on, a nutritional session going on and we’ve got unit meetings going on. We rotate it round – defenders working as a unit, midfield players and forwards. There was a video before training this morning to get the lads mind-set right, yet again they trained extremely well.”
