Samuel scores on return

12 November 2013

Reading U21s 3-3 Northampton Town

Royals striker Dominic Samuel scored on his return from injury as our under-21s drew 3-3 with Northampton Town at Hogwood Park on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the Cobblers who took a firm grip on the friendly match when they opened the scoring and added another from close range.

It was then three just ten minutes later, the Town striker slotting home past Royals goalkeeper Dan Lincoln.

But back Reading came. Striker Gozie Ugwu hauled the Royals back into the game in impressive style, as he held the ball up well and then audaciously flicked the ball past the Northampton goalkeeper and into the net.

And just before half time, Martin Kuhl's men scored a second. After a good team move, right back Sean Long was presented with a great chance through on goal, and took his opportunity excellently - hammering the ball into the top corner.

After the break, Town were unlucky not to retake the lead. They first hit the woodwork after some good play, before Lincoln pulled off a superb save from eight yards out before Reading desperately cleared.

But the Royals reasserted their authority on the match as they dominated possession, and went very close to making it three but Ugwu was just wide.

Samuel, returning from injury, almost got himself on the scoresheet midway through the second half when he shot from distance, but the Cobblers 'keeper tipped his effort over the bar.

Academy winger Tariqe Fosu came on and made a positive impact. Causing all sorts of problems down the left hand side, the pint-sized attacker worked well in the build up for our third goal, as Samuel eventually got hold of the ball and placed a tidy effort into the back of the net from the edge of the area.

It rounded off an entertaining game at Hogwood Park, with the score finishing 3-3.

Reading: Lincoln; Long, Griffin, Cooper (Sweeney 65), Keown; D'Ath, Tshibola, Tanner (Fosu 60), Murombedzi; Samuel, Ugwu
