"We know the league"
Chris Gunter believes that the Royals’ Championship experience will help them in their quest for promotion back to the Premier League.
The Welsh international has plenty of second tier experience with Nottingham Forest, a trait shared by many of his teammates – with seven of the matchday squad against Doncaster Rovers last time out boasting Championship winning medals.
“I think when a team gets relegated everyone is looking to see how they start the season – the first thing they say is ‘is there a hangover from the relegation’,” said Gunter.
“We’ve started quite well, we’ve been really good at home and we’ve settled back into it well. A lot of the squad know the league and have played in it before which is a big factor. We know the Championship is a tough league and as one of the promotion favourites we can be picked off at any time, so we knew we had to get stuck in straight away.”
Chris became the youngest Wales player ever to reach 50 caps in the recent international break, and also emphasised the need for Reading’s players to cope with the pressure of being tipped for promotion.
“The expectation is something you have to deal with as a player. People over the summer were naturally backing us to go straight back up, but from playing in the league before we know how tough a league it is. We are fully focused.”
