Spotlight on youth

Youngsters come to the fore

The Royals have an excellent reputation of producing and developing top young players, and that was emphasised this past weekend.

Nigel Adkins' men had five Academy players on the pitch in our narrow 2-1 defeat to league leaders Burnley, and finished the game with just one player over the age of 30 and an average age of 24.5.

21-year-old Jake Taylor came off the bench in the second half to join fellow Academy graduates Jordan Obita, Alex McCarthy and Alex Pearce on the field of play, while Hal Robson-Kanu made way at this stage.

The manager has highlighted the importance of giving our youngsters a chance, and with the Royals squad somewhat depleted due to a number of injuries - of course including a serious one to former Academy man Jem Karacan - our young players again had that opportunity to impress.
