Youngsters join set up
The Royals are adding Estonian youth frontman Bogdan Vastsuk to our under 18 squad, and we are also in talks to bring in 18-year-old Georgian youth international Lasha Dvali.
17-year-old Vastsuk arrives from his homeland to join our Category One Academy while Dvali is at Skonto Riga and is likely to be loaned back to the Latvian club in the first instance. The deal is subject to work permit and international clearance.
Earlier this summer, forward Harry Cardwell came in from Hull City, while midfielder Lewis Collins arrived from Grimsby Town. In addition defender Zak Jules came in from Luton Town and winger Hammad Lawal joined from Millwall.
So far this season our under 18s have defeated Bolton Wanderers and Leicester City before being edged out 4-3 by Fulham in a repeat of last season’s Barclays Under-18 Premier League national final.
A number of Academy players, including our new arrivals, have been on international duty over the past week. Centre back Jake Cooper represented England u19s in a win over Bogdan Vastsuk's Estonia, in a game that winger Tariqe Fosu-Henry was on standby and Niall Keown missed out through injury.
Sean Long and Liam Kelly both came on in Ireland u19s' win over Slovenia on Thursday, having also played for their country on Tuesday as well. Icelander Samuel Fridjonsson was in their u19 squad as they beat Scotland 3-0 to round off a good, whilst goalkeeper goalkeeper Lewis Collins' Northern Ireland's U19 face Austria away in a friendly on Wednesday afternoon.
