Academy stun Man City

24 September 2013

Man City U18s 2-4 Reading U18s

A brace from Liam Kelly helped Reading's Academy to a fantastic 4-2 victory at Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Jack Stacey and Aaron Kuhl's scored in between Kelly's double, as the young Royals withstood a brave City comeback to finish the job off and secure all three points.

Our youngsters survived an early spell of pressure from City, and broke the deadlock mid-way through the first half. Kelly, scorer of a magical free kick which has gone viral, was at it again when he superbly curled a free kick into the top corner.

It was almost two moments later when City goalkeeper Billy O'Brien had to save well from another free-kick, but Reading's Academy did double their advantage when midfielder Stacey tapped in from close range.

The Citizens pulled one back on the stroke of half time when captain James Horsfield converted a penalty after Thierry Ambrose was brought down in the box.

City came flying out of the blocks after the interval, and equalised on the hour mark. Brandon Barker placed the ball passed the helpless Lewis Ward for 2-2.

But just five minutes later, the Royals retook the lead. This time it was Kuhl's turn to score from a free-kick, as his strike took a deflection on its way into the net.

Kelly then scored his second and Reading's fourth 12 minutes from time to secure a fantastic win away in Manchester - their fourth of this Barclays Under 18 Premier League season.
