Adkins: We're up for it

14 September 2013

Manager relishing Seagulls clash

Nigel Adkins says his players are fired up for Sunday's Sky Bet Championship clash with Brighton after an excellent week on the training ground.

A month has passed since the Royals took to the Madejski Stadium pitch for league action, and three points against the Seagulls is exactly what Adkins is targetting.

"But we’ve had some good training going on at the training ground this week in particular," he told Reading FC Player. "The lads have been really really up for it, really good intensity about how we’ve gone and trained this week so we’ve been really pleased about that.

"It’s been 30 days since we’ve had a league game at Madejski Stadium, we all remember that fantastic 3-3 draw with Watford. What we’ve got now is an opportunity to reproduce and improve on the performance that we had on that day and make it an exciting and entertaining game for the supporters again – and win!"

Brighton are the first of three Championship opponents for the Royals in seven days with Leeds United and Derby County on the horizon, and Adkins says our supporters will be imperative for what is a "big week".

"We’ve got a great week lined up – we’ve got Brighton on Sunday, then Wednesday we’ve got Leeds United at home and then we travel up to the midlands to go and play Derby so it’s a big week – one that all the squad have got to be utilised and be ready to go and perform at the maximum.

"The football club is about the supporters – let’s make sure everyone is well aware of that. The heart, the life, the soul of any football club is about the supporters. And they have another opportunity to get down to Madejski Stadium and get right behind the players, create that atmosphere and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of noise going on. The players have got to generate it on the pitch to transfer to the stand, and likewise from the stands that energy and positivity has got to transfer onto the players to give them every opportunity to go and perform at their maximum."
