Boss on Pavel red card

15 September 2013

Adkins' views on dismissal

Nigel Adkins empathised with Pavel Pogrebnyak after the striker was sent off for two yellow cards against Brighton.

Put simply, both bookings were debatable, particularly the second when we should have been awarded a free kick for a foul on him by Keith Andrews.

Adkins said, "You feel for the big man, we're trying to give Pav an opportunity, it's a fresh start with him playing today.

"First one, he had the impetus to come back and chase, to be honest I've only seen them once just before I did my Sky interview. He's made a challenge, the player has then had another two steps before he goes to ground.

"Second one, there is contact on him, that's a clear foul. But with a man of his stature it's presumed he shouldn't go down in the manner he has. But he's sent him off and we have to deal with the situation that has arisen.

"Since I've been here it's not worked out for Pav, like I say it was a fresh start. He's worked really well on the training ground this week, we try to give him the opportunity to play and have a fresh start, unfortunately after half an hour he's been sent off, but we'll pick him up."
