Boss: Quick Baird deal key

Adkins on new addition

Manager Nigel Adkins believes the timing of Chris Baird's arrival is key.

The Northern Ireland international has signed in time to be involved at Derby this weekend, and with Jem Karacan on the sidelines and more injuries to contend with, Chris brings a wealth of experience to Adkins' midfield options.

31-year-old Chris has been training with another Championship club but we have moved to secure his services until January.

Adkins told Reading FC Player, "With losing Jem the other night, the club has acted very quickly which is great.

"Because of that we've got another experienced player into the fold.

"It's very good to have him here, he's an international player and has lots of good experience.

"As it stands we are already taking several young lads up to Derby, and Chris' experience also helps with that.

"We have several players nursing injuries from the other night, it's a quick turnaround with the games being Sunday, Wednesday and now Saturday, it's great for the youngsters to be involved because we want to promote them.

"As we've highlighted, Chris is an experienced Premier League player and we're very pleased to have him here."

An exclusive video interview with Chris is online on Reading FC Player now, as well as the thoughts of Nigel Adkins and footage of Baird at Hogwood Park - sign up today from less than 10p per day.
