Brian: "Fans were terrific"

McDermott thankful for Royal reception

Leeds boss Brian McDermott was keen to personally thank the Reading faithful for a tremendous welcome on his return to Madejski Stadium this evening.

"I thought the reception I got was fantastic and I really did appreciate that," he told BBC Radio Berkshire after late, late drama at the place he called home for more than thirteen years in total.

"I've been here a long, long time as you all know. And I thought the Reading fans were terrific tonight. I always appreciated the supporters here - they always travelled in their numbers away and at home they always used to get us over the line, especially late in the game.

"And this is a good night for the Reading fans and the Reading team."

With the game seemingly destined to end goalless, up popped Adam Le Fondre with a headed winner in the last seconds of time added on. It was all so familiar.

"I think, in the last three and a half years, my teams here managed to do that here a few times," the Leeds boss wryly smiled.

"Neither goalkeeper was worked enough and there was nothing in the game, especially in the first half. It was really disappointing to lose it at the end. But that's life.

"We did that to Brighton in the first game of the season and, tonight, it's a good result for Nigel and for Reading."

Asked about his feelings upon his return to Reading and taking up a spot in the away dugout, Brian added "We just tried to come here and get a result. It wasn't about the fact we'd been here before, you have to take the emotion out of it.

"But this Reading side have got good players, good individual players with talent. They have a good manager, good staff - staff who I know from my time here, and they've got good fans.

"And this is the best start they've had in the last three years - I should know because I was manager here for those three years! This is never going to be an easy place to come to - they've only lost one game so far this season. So they'll be delighted with themselves tonight."
