'Great team performance'

Boss speaks on superb win

Manager Nigel Adkins heaped praise on the entire group of players after a fantastic 3-1 away win at Derby County.

Adkins' team put in a great display at Pride Park, with Pavel Pogrebnyak scoring twice and Nick Blackman adding a late third to put the seal on all three points.

Nigel said, "It was an excellent performance and the players were outstanding.

"When you consider we had a difficult game on Wednesday night and expended a lot of energy, we lost several players as well so we knew coming here would be difficult against an excellent Derby side.

"We came with a gameplan, paid them a lot of respect in how we set up and it worked a treat for us. We had a mid-third block, looked to counter and we did that for the final goal. You've got to be disciplined to play like that and the players did that."

Pogrebnyak scored two but also put in an excellent performance on the ball, and Adkins said, "Big Pav has scored a couple of goals and I've said it many times, he's been working hard on the training ground. The transfer window has closed and that has made a massive positive difference. He's put two good goals in the back of the net which is fantastic.

"There were so many contributions across the team, that's why you need a squad, especially when you lose players.

"Alex McCarthy came and claimed a number of crosses and was very commanding in goal.

"Young Jordan Obita was excellent for us on his first start, and we want to bring players through the system, Tish was on the bench, we brought a number of young lads with us today because we didn't know where we were with all the injuries.

"We didn't expect Danny Guthrie to play but Lazarus has risen! Great credit to him because I know he's in a lot of pain with his shoulder but he drove us on yet again.

"Hope Akpan made an impact having played nearly 90 minutes in midweek, then Shaun Cummings as well has done the same.

"Chris Baird signed yesterday and played a fantastic hour for us. After the blow of losing Jem he did really well and was superb in the holding midfield role.

"So it's a happy dressing room and back-to-back wins is important. We'd have liked another clean sheet though!"

The win puts us on 15 points from 8 games, and the boss was asked about a positive beginning to the League campaign, saying, "I'm glad you've highlighted that it's a good start.

"A team coming down is always looked at, rightly the expectation is to be pushing near the top.

"I'm not sure what the stats are for the club in recent times but this will up there in the last seven or eight years, and we're in the most successful period in the club's history as well.

"We just want to stay in the race. Don't get too high or too low - admittedly I'm a little bit high right now but that's understandable!"
