Gunter: Form will come

Defender on building on clean sheets

Royals defender Chris Gunter says that putting clean sheets together is the right platform to go on a positive run of results.

Although Nigel Adkins' men had to settle for a draw in a ten-man stalemate with Brighton at Madejski Stadium, the Welsh international believes Wednesday night's game with Leeds United is a quick opportunity to go one better and record all three points.

"It was a strange game going down to ten men and the mindset changed a little bit, and then they went down to ten men too. In the second half I thought it was a little bit more open - we were trying to push for the winner but it didn't come. Alex made some great saves, and that's what you come to expect from a top class goalkeeper.

"For us it's just about another home game coming up and chance to get three points. I'm sure he (Brian McDermott) will get a really good reception when he comes back on Wednesday, but once the game starts we just need to try and get three points."

Gunter is very much familiar with the twists and turns of the Championship after spending six seasons in the second tier with Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest, and knows that a solid run of form can can dramatically change a club's position in the table.

"Ideally we'd like the full set of wins but in a 46-game season you're not going to win every week," he added.

"We just need to carry on building - there's been times here in the past where the club hasn't been at the top from the start of the season. And in my experience in this league with Nottingham Forest, we were never at the top in the start of the season but if you go on a run of wins it can propel you up the league - and keeping clean sheets is a good start."
