McCarthy bags award

15 September 2013

Stopper catches the eye

Alex McCarthy was voted as the official Sky Sports man of the match on Sunday afternoon, after another fantastic display in a Reading shirt.

The Academy product pulled off a string of superb second half saves, with the most eye catching two reflex stops to deny substitute Ashley Barnes.

“I thought there were a couple of chances for both sides but overall it was a fair result,” said McCarthy.

“My main thing is to concentrate on club football, hopefully I can keep playing that and it will give me a chance (at international level).”

The Royals stopper was presented with the man of the match champagne by Seagulls midfielder Keith Andrews, who gave his assessment on a lively clash - having been involved in the second yellow card for Pavel Pogrebnyak.

“I don’t know, I didn’t think it was a dirty game and there were two players sent off – which is a shame as I didn’t think there was a bad tackle in the game. It didn’t spoil the game but it obviously had a real effect on it. Reading proved worth opponents today, they’re a good side and on the whole a point was a fair reflection.”
