Stephen's baby joy

9 September 2013

Full back speaks on the birth of his son

Stephen Kelly has spoken of his delight following the birth of his baby boy Hugo last week.

The Irish international missed the Royals' win over Yeovil Town and an Irish international call up following the arrival of his child, and the club were delighted to hear that all was well in the Kelly household as he returned to the fray against Oman this past weekend.

"It’s been amazing, my wife Helga and I are just so happy – little Hugo came along and it’s been an absolute whirlwind," said Stephen.

"It’s hard to describe, we’re both in a euphoric haze at the moment. The two of us just absolutely adore him and it’s a fantastic time. It’s amazing to become a parent, a life changer – but for the better! We’re just really delighted he’s here safely. Hopefully it won’t be too long until he's down at Madejski Stadium watching me! I think in a few weeks and my wife can bring him along!"

In football terms, the 30-year-old was also pleased to get his first 90 minutes of the season in the international challenge match - something which could vital for the Royals with Wayne Bridge currently sidelined with a knee injury.

"It was nice to get some minutes under my belt, I felt I needed it today. Oman are a good passing side, we let ourselves down a little bit as they scored from their only two shots on goal. But we have to learn, these games are all lessons that we can learn from and it shows us what we can be doing better."
