Hope looks to Pride Park
Hope Akpan has hailed the Royals’ resilience, and urged his teammates to carry their momentum into Saturday’s trip to Pride Park.
Nigel Adkins’ men will take on Derby County off the back off a thrilling victory over Brian McDermott’s Leeds, and with a number of players potentially in the treatment room – the young midfielder believes the squad will need to step up to the plate.
“The gaffer did say at the beginning of the season we need a big squad, we need everyone behind the team – and it’s going to be important over the next few weeks that all those players that have maybe been squad players previously, are ready to play when call upon,” he told Reading FC Player.
“From a personal point of view, as I get more minutes on the pitch I’ll get fitter and I’ll get stronger. But it’s about the boys tonight – it was a great feeling to get a win late on, one of the best – and now we have to go to Derby and get three points.”
Of course Wednesday’s clash was marred by an injury to Jem Karacan, who was stretched off early in the encounter – and Akpan was quick to give his full support to the Turkish Academy product.
“I was gutted to see Jem get injured, but we all know he’s a strong character and will come back even stronger. He was in the dressing room at the end of the game and was obviously a bit down, but everyone is wishing him well and we hope it’s not too bad.”
