Middlesbrough beaten 3-0Middlesbrough U21s 0
Reading U21s 3 (Kelly 25, Tshibola 58, Ugwu 67)
The Royals under-21s warmed up for this Saturday's Barclays Premier League Cup Final second leg by beating Middlesbrough 3-0 away from home on Monday night.
While the first team picked up a valuable point against Championship leaders Leicester, Martin Kuhl's men coasted to victory in the North East thanks to goals from Liam Kelly, Aaron Tshibola and Gozie Ugwu.
It was Boro with the first chance. With eight minutes played Lewis Sirrell played a delightful ball just left of centre to release Mark Kitching and a low shot brought a save from our goalkeeper Daniel Lincoln.
The Royals soon took control and had the game's next opportunity with Tariqe Fosu wriggling his way into the Boro box, but hitting defender David Atkinson on the back with a shot.
The opening goal came with 25 minutes played. A cross from the right caused problems in the Boro box and the pint-sized Kelly, the quickest to react, rose to head home from around seven yards.
Reading nearly added a second when Gozie Ugwu set up Fosu who had made a good run inside the area, but Middlesbrough stopper Joe Fryer produced a decent save.
Another chance went amiss before half time when Aaron Kuhl crossed low and hard, but a deflection saw the ball squirm not far off target.
In the second half, Jack Stacey did extremely well to work his way into a scoring position, but the winger misfired his effort.
But soon the Royals did double their advantage. Sean Long ran down the right and crossed into the box for Tshibola, who controlled well and smashed home from the edge of the six-yard bow.
And midway through the half, the points were certainly heading back to Berkshire as Ugwu struck low from 22 yards into the back of the net.
