Manager and coaches react
The Royals Academy management and coaching staff have given their reaction to another fantastic night of Youth Cup football at Madejski Stadium, as Reading could count themselves slightly unfortunate to finish the first leg of their semi-final all square at 2-2.
Academy Manager Eamonn Dolan: “I’m delighted with the way that the boys were. Doddsy and Gilkesy’s game plan was outstanding, I think the work they do with the boys is outstanding and I thought the boys were outstanding. We got a great compliment from our manager afterwards, we are very lucky to have the manager and the staff that we’ve got – and he described the football as beautiful. What a compliment from a top, top man and a top, top manager. Great night for us and now it’s all set up for us to do the same in the second leg.”
Assistant Academy Manager David Dodds: “Their performance levels in the first half were excellent, then we were left with the dilemma, do we drop back and settle for 2-0 or try and end the tie on the night? We tried to end the tie on the night but it didn’t come off. Credit to Fulham, they hit us a couple of times with good runs.”
Academy Coach Michael Gilkes: “It was pleasing for the lads. You work hard in the week, trying to give them ideas – and they went and expressed themselves in the right way, as individuals and collectively. The performance outweighed the result in the end, but it’s half time and it’s all to play for. We can’t wait to go down to Craven Cottage and put in another performance.”
