Boss: Second half key

5 April 2014

Adkins speaks after 1-0 win

Manager Nigel Adkins was delighted with his team's performance as they earned a vitally important 1-0 win away to Charlton.

The Royals raised the tempo in the second half, and got a deserved goal through the impressive Danny Williams.

The win strengthens our grip on a play-off place, and the boss said, "We've come away from home again and won, which is five wins and one draw in our last six away games. We're winning away from home and we kept a clean sheet, that's important.

"Charlton play some good football. But we had a good defensive shape, we had to grind it and in the second half the momentum was with us. The goal was coming, we were on the front foot at that point.

"It's an important three points and the supporters go away happy, like we do!"

Speaking about matchwinner Williams, Adkins said, "I thought he had a really good game, and scored an excellent goal driving on from midfield.

"We were better in the second half, and away from home we've scored some fantastic counter-attacking goals. We're a massive threat with the pace we've got."'

The pitch at the Valley was tricky for both teams, but Adkins had always stressed the need to rule it out of the equation. "We knew it would be a challenge, but we were prepared for it all week and our mindset was for that not to be a factor or an excuse. They've had problems here but the groundsmen work extremely hard and it's the same for both sides."

Lastly, the boss was told of Leicester's promotion in his post-match press conference and said, "Congratulations, that's fantastic for them and richly deserved. Credit to Nigel Pearson, Craig Shakespeare and all their players and staff. The deserve all the plaudits they get, they've been consistent and to get promoted so early is a massive achievement, especially having missed out last season. And we play them a week Monday so I hope they go on holiday between now and then!"
