'Destiny in our hands'

Adkins reacts to crucial win over Boro

Manager Nigel Adkins was delighted with his players after they put their play-off destiny back in their own hands by beating Middlesbrough 2-0.

The victory took the Royals into the top six with just two games to go in the Sky Bet Championship season.

Adkins said, "'Great credit to the players. They put a great shift in. They showed grit and determination, and a hunger that was there two years ago. That's important. And they showed quality as well, so they deserve all the plaudits that come their way.

"We're in the race, two games to go and we must keep going.

"We started really well and played some good football on a beautiful pitch. We were on the front foot, dominant, and then had to show a different side in the second half. We've had walking wounded, the captain led by example, so many to talk about, Danny Guthrie came off, Hal got a horrendous blow to the face, several players had a right good go and there was a real togetherness.

"After Wigan we've responded in the right manner. The crowd were fantastic, the atmosphere was great, we're back in the play-offs and our destiny is in our hands."

Adam Le Fondre got his first goal since January in what was our first home win in the same period, and the boss was very pleased to break both cycles.

He said, "I'm very happy for him, he normally goes on runs of goals so let's hope he goes on another one now! Tonight he's gone and scored the all-important poacher's goal.

"For the first goal, oh my word what a ball in from Jordan Obita, how he's dug that in from the byline. Garath nods it back and Adam is there to do what good strikers do. He got us off to a great start."

Nigel was asked by one TV reporter whether the second half was 'boring' as we saw out the game comfortably, but he disagreed completely, saying with a smile, "A disappointing second half?! And boring?! How exciting was that! We had a defensive resolve, we had to fix bayonets against a team that pass the ball, and we had chances, what about the run by Pav! Unbelievable! Great mazy run! Then the linesman says its a corner but the ref gives a goal kick! There was Chrissy Gunter's shot over the bar, Danny Williams, it was a great second half! Grit and determination that is required to win things! It means we're back in the play-off positions, two games left with a massively difficult one at Doncaster, they're fighting and we'll have to score two because Sharpy is bound to get one for them!

"So we need to win another two games to get in the play-offs and then anything can happen. We've been patching up a team since September and we're still in there!"
