Hillsborough Tributes

14 April 2014

Skipper leads remembrance

Reading skipper Jobi McAnuff laid a wreath in Madejski Stadium's centre circle prior to kick off on Monday evening, as the Royals joined the world of football with a tribute to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

The fixture kicked off at 8.07pm - as  a mark of respect and remembrance for those who lost their lives as a result of the tragic events of April 1989. The match at which the disaster took place, the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, was ended six minutes after kick-off, at 3:06pm.

The minute's silence before kick off was impeccably observed by both sets of supporters, and asked before the game - Nigel Adkins discussed the importance of such a tribute.

"I think across football, it will always be remembered and rightly so," he said.  "It was a very tragic day for everybody and our heartfelt thoughts and respects go out to all of the families that sadly lost people that day."
