U21s draw as Mikele returns

3 April 2014

Reading U21 1-1 Sunderland U21

Mikele Leigertwood played a scheduled 45 minutes on his return from long term injury as the Royals under 21s drew 1-1 with Sunderland on Thursday evening.

The midfielder, who has been sidelined for almost a year with an ankle injury, looked assured as he made his first tentative steps towards match fitness - though will need plenty more game time before he comes into first team contention.

It was another returning Royal, Gozie Ugwu, who opened the scoring - firing home an excellent low strike from the right of the area just before the hour mark.

However Reading were pegged back in unfortunate fashion, as Mikael Mandron initially saw his penalty saved by the excellent Dan Lincoln, only for the Black Cats forward to smash home the rebound off the crossbar.

Craig Tanner also hit the woodwork in a lively second half, but it wasn't enough to grab all three points for Martin Kuhl's men.
