Adkins: "We know it'll be a challenge"

Manager's Wigan Preview

Nigel Adkins believes the opportunity is there for the more senior players in his squad to show their qualities as the Royals prepare to kick off their Sky Bet Championship season with a trip to Wigan.

The manager revealed that 11 of his 18 player matchday squad could be graduates from the club’s Academy this weekend, and with a young group of players forming the core of the side – has called on the more experienced members of the group to play their part.

“We know it’ll be a challenge but we have potential here, what we have to do is give ourselves every opportunity to extract all that potential from the group,” said Adkins.

“There’s a strong feeling for the club, everyone wants to do well. Everybody needs the opportunity to flourish, and the more situations we’re placed in the more the players will take that responsibility and the leaders will come to the forefront. Senior players have left and that’s an opportunity for the younger ones to step up. We’ll find out whether we can do that. There’s a good feel good factor and the players are working hard for each other.”

Reading’s boss has admitted that Uwe Rösler’s Latics may be considered favourites for the curtain raiser – though sees that as an opportunity to take the pressure off his young players.

“They're the home side and they will go into the game being favourites, they play various formations and the amount of players they’ve got to select from is phenomenal. They’ll go into it with a desire to get back up to the Premier League but we also go in there full of confidence. We’ve worked really hard in pre-season, we want to be the best that we can be, we’ve got a spirit amongst ourselves. We’ve got to make sure it’s a big challenge for Wigan.”

The boss also gave an injury update ahead of the trip to Wigan. Click here for our match preview.
