McCarthy starts, Mackie & Ferdinand out

12 August 2014

Keeper to face County tonight

Manager Nigel Adkins has confirmed that goalkeeper Alex McCarthy will face Newport County this evening, while new signings Jamie Mackie and Anton Ferdinand will not be involved.

McCarthy was named as a substitute for our Sky Bet Championship game at Wigan on Saturday, but will get his chance between the sticks for this evening's Capital One Cup match, kick off 8pm.

Adkins said, "Alex will play tonight, I spoke to both the goalkeepers on Friday and told them who would start at Wigan and then against Newport.

"Feds played on Saturday because he's had an excellent pre-season, and he was knocking it out from the back and it opened play up really nicely.

"Jamie Mackie is not available, we spotted a minor hamstring in his medical when he signed. He's desperate to play but we'll do it right and look after him to get it right. It's a ten day thing."

Ferdinand awaits his international clearance after signing on Monday, and in addition he has not played much football in the last 12 months so will need a couple of weeks or so before he can be considered for full first team involvement.

Stephen Kelly was ruled out of Saturday's game at Wigan, while Garath McCleary, Hal Robson-Kanu, Jem Karacan and Danny Williams also missed out. Danny Guthrie played half an hour despite missing all of our pre-season fixtures.

Simon Cox could make his second Reading home debut although the boss is unlikely to make wholesale changes, saying, "We've got a relentless period of games going Saturday/Tuesday, with a young, hungry squad. There aren't many changes we can make, we'll see where everyone is after Saturday and take stock. Everyone will get plenty of game time just due to the number of games we've got. With a first team squad of around 20, nine have stepped up from the under 21s."

The game kicks off at 8pm, and tickets start at just £1 when bought in advance. T ickets are on general sale - call 0118 968 1313, pop into the ticket office in person.
This match is unreserved seating within the East Stand and West Lower Stand.
