Royals winger a positive influenceGarath McCleary is determined to have a positive impact on proceedings at Hogwood Park, even as he recovers from back surgery heading into the new Sky Bet Championship campaign.
The winger is likely to miss the opening stages of the season as he undergoes his recovery, but wants to do everything he can to help out the Royals’ emerging talent.
“I’ve always wanted to do well for the team and hopefully that continues,” said Garath.
“It’s great to support the team and if anyone needs a kick up the backside then I’m here! We have a lot of young lads here who are doing really well – and I would hope to see myself as someone people can talk to if needed. There are players here with plenty of experience who are always willing to help out.”
Despite an unfortunate series of injuries ruling McCleary, Jem Karacan, Danny Guthrie, Danny Williams and Stephen Kelly out of Saturday’s curtain raiser with Wigan – the former Nottingham Forrest man is remaining optimistic ahead of the new campaign.
“I’ve been impressed with how we’ve done in pre-season, even just watching training – there’s a good unity around the place at the moment. Everyone’s been very positive. All we can do is play to the best of our ability, keep the positive vibe going and take each game as it comes. The gaffer has been great.”
