Manager Nigel Adkins has confirmed that goalkeeper Alex McCarthy will face Newport County this evening, while new signings Jamie Mackie and Anton Ferdinand will not be involved.

Stephen Kelly was ruled out of Saturday's game at Wigan, while Garath McCleary, Hal Robson-Kanu, Jem Karacan and Danny Williams also missed out. Danny Guthrie played half an hour despite missing all of our pre-season fixtures. Simon Cox could make his second Reading home debut although the boss is unlikely to make wholesale changes.

Royals boss Nigel Adkins: "We've got another game in the cup now and we've got to build on that really good start. We've got a relentless period of games going Saturday/Tuesday, with a young, hungry squad. There aren't many changes we can make."

Royals defender Shaun Cummings: "We've got three home games now and playing at home is going to be key. We want to do well at home and show our fans that all the work we've been doing is worthwhile."
