U18s draw with Villa in opener

19 August 2014

Osho scores for the Royals

The Royals drew their first game of the U18s Premier League with a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at Hogwood Park on Saturday.

A number of newly signed first year scholars were named in the starting line-up for Reading, including Josh Barrett, Sam Smith and Daniel Akinwunmi, and the youngsters did not look out of place as David Dodds' men pressed for the first goal of the game.

After a scrappy first half, the Royals took the lead with just 15 minutes left on the clock.

After a corner, substitute Daniel Williams attempted an overhead kick which cannoned off the woodwork, only for defender Gabriel Osho to gobble up the rebound and put the hosts ahead.

But the lead lasted just ten minutes, as a Villa man got on the end of a free-kick into the box to level.

Striker Josh Barrett almost retook the lead for the Royals at the death but his effort rolled just wide.

It ended 1-1, as Reading got their first point on the board ahead of Saturday's trip to Norwich City.

Royals: Ward; Akinwunmi, Sheppard, Osho, Jules; Collins (Waritay 67), Husin, Smith, Lawal (Urbancic 80); Cardwell (Williams 60), Barrett

Subs not used: Ethelston, Southwood
