U21s lose to experienced Newcastle

Ben Arfa helps Toon win 5-2 thriller

Reading's under-21s were beaten by an experienced Newcastle United side in a high scoring game in the North East on Monday.

The likes of France international Hatem Ben Arfa and English youth internationals Gael Bigirimana and Sammy Ameobi started for the Toon against a young Royals side.

The visitors raced into an early two-goal advantage when Royals defender Rob Dickie scored after barely a minute played and Conor Shaughnessy made it two after just 13 minutes.

But Peter Beardsley's side responded fantastically. United striker Adam Armstrong halved the deficit before Sammy Ameobi nodded home from a corner to draw the Magpies level on the stroke of half time.

Midfielder Bigirimana then fired against the woodwork, before Armstrong grabbed his second goal of the afternoon to edge United ahead.

Hatem Ben Arfa, who has played in the Champions League, made it 4-2 with a fine individual effort, before Armstrong put the result beyond any doubt with time ticking away as he slotted in number five.

A valiant effort from the Royals U21s though, who next face Stoke City away in the league on Friday 12th September.
