Local school commemorates Football Remembers Weekend

2 December 2014

Local youngsters design memorial

Saturday’s home game with Bolton Wanderers will see Reading commemorate the Christmas Truce, as part of the Football Remembers Week.

The scheme is a collaboration between the Premier League, the FA, the Football League and the British Council and the two teams will pose for a photo with one another before kick-off.

The image is being taken as a mark of respect to those British and German soldiers who played in the 1914 Christmas Truce match during the First World War.

Supporters are encouraged to do the same with their fellow fans, and upload the images via their social media accounts, throughout the Football Remembers week.

As part of a nationwide competition, a memorial will also be unveiled on the site at St George’s Park.

A local special needs school to Reading Football Club, The Avenue School, entered the competition and scored very highly. Jem Karacan, Simon Cox and Anton Ferdinand went along to see the design, below, on Monday afternoon.

The winner, Spencer Turner from Newcastle, was selected by Arsenal forward Theo Walcott and the Duke of Cambridge.
