Royals commemorate Football Remembers Week

8 December 2014

Teams of all ages pose for group photos

The football community commemorated the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War - the 1914 Christmas Truce match in Flanders, Belgium - on Saturday.

Reading Football Club and Bolton Wanderers posed together in a team photo at the Madejski Stadium, alongside all the teams taking part in the Barclays Premier League, Sky Bet Championship and FA Cup second-round matches.

The Royals’ U18 side also took part before their Premier League victory over Fulham, as did the U9s, prior to their game with Queens Park Rangers.

All starting players mingled with their opposition in a group photograph as a mark of respect to those that played in the 1914 Christmas Truce match.

Photos from around the country have been uploaded to a special website, where fans, teams and schools have also been asked to upload their pre-match pictures via social media over the course of Football Remembers Week.

Any match of any size can still be uploaded as part of the week. From school to Sunday league fixtures, five-a-side matches and kickabouts in the back garden. The site is designed to act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations.
