Royals defender hails squad bond
Stephen Kelly says the spirit in the Royals squad is as good as he has experienced in his 13 year career.
Despite results not going for Nigel Adkins’ side over the festive period, the 30-year-old defender insists that a close bond between the group will help to turn results around.
“The spirit here is amazing, the camaraderie between the lads is fantastic. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a team where there was such a close knit group of players,” said Kelly.
“Of course in football you’re only really happy when you’re winning. I don’t care what anyone else says, you can play the best football in the world but if you lose the game you’re not happy afterwards. But hopefully with that draw we’ve stopped that rot and we can get that enjoyment back.”
The New Year’s Day clash with Forest will always be a memorable one for Stephen – his late leveler was just the third goal in 200 league appearances.
“I was absolutely delighted to get the goal, just so happy to be in the right place at the right time. As a full back I don’t get in the box that often, but I connected well with it and just tried to head it down. There’s nothing nicer than scoring in the last minute.”
