Ugwu scores in U21s loss

6 January 2014

Gozie strikes for Royals

Royals striker Gozie Ugwu scored on his return from a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town, though our under-21s were beaten 4-1 by an experienced Luton Town side.

Youngsters Craig Tanner, Pierce Sweeney and Sean Long - all of whom were on the bench for the first team's FA Cup third round exit at Brighton, each played the full 90 while Niall Keown and Aaron Tshibola - who travelled along with the squad at the weekend - also started.

And it was Long who set up the first goal of the game. The right back raced down his flank and delivered an excellent ball to Ugwu, who found the back of the net with a low header.

But ten minutes later, the Hatters capitalised on a defensive error and scored thanks to a well-taken low drive, before a deflected strike put them ahead just before half time.

Luton added a scrappy goal from a corner after the break before putting the Royals U21s out of sight when they scored their fourth.

Royals U21s: Moore; Long, Griffin, Sweeney, Keown; Tshibola, Kuhl, Stacey, Tanner; Samuel, Ugwu.

Subs on in second half: Murombedzi, Partridge.
