Midfielder takes leadership honour
The Club would like to offer huge congratulations to Jem Karacan, who has been named club captain.
Speaking after our friendly at Yeovil, Nigel Adkins confirmed that the 25-year-old has been handed the honour.
Nigel said, "Jem Karacan was given the club captaincy last week.
"Jem is ready to step up and show the leadership qualities he's got within him. He's been at the football club since the Academy stages.
"He's come through the system and played in the first team, he's demonstrated he's got the ability that is required to be a leader of a group of people. He's got a feel for this football club, he knows what is requires and now I want him to step up and lead.
"But I don't want one person to harbour all of the responsibility. We've got a young group, I want people to share the burden and I want to develop more leaders within that group.
"Chrissy Gunter had the armband on first half, Shaun Cummings had it on second half. You saw last year that we had a leadership group with several people wearing the captain's armband and I want a group of players to stand up and who want to take responsibility.
"We've got to be a team. It's not up to one person."
Jem came through our Academy system and has played 153(+11) games for the Royals, scoring 11 goals along the way. He is currently out injured but working very hard on his rehab with our medical team.
A great character and extremely popular with our players, staff and supporters, he is certain to lead the team with pride, passion and ability.
He tweeted, "Honoured to be announced new Reading FC captain! Looking forward to the new season & can't wait to get back playing playing!
"Thanks for all the messages and support it's much appreciated see you at the mad stad soon!"
