Nine U21s join first team camp

3 July 2014

Adkins integrates youngsters

Royals boss Nigel Adkins has taken nine under 21s players on a first team pre-season training camp.

Adkins led the squad to the Midlands on Wednesday morning, and included in the group are Craig Tanner, Aaron Kuhl, Aaron Tshibola, Ryan Edwards, Pierce Sweeney, Jack Stacey, Jake Cooper, Sean Long and Shane Griffin.

Eight of those nine players played in our under 21s' successful Premier League Cup triumph last season, while Edwards was on a season-long loan to Perth Glory.

In addition, Player of the Season Jordan Obita is still only 20 but is now a first team regular, and Michael Hector is 21.

In fact, this travelling squad's average age is just 22.

Pavel Pogrebnyak is the only player over 30; Stephen Kelly reports back next week after being on international duty over the summer.

Also back in the fold after a loan spell is Danish goalkeeper Mikkel Andersen.

Jem Karacan is also part of the squad but is still in the early stages of his football rehab.

Garath McCleary is also nursing a back injury at the moment but has travelled.

This Midlands trip marks the start of our full pre-season training, after two days of testing at Southampton Solent University. The squad return to Hogwood next week, and our first pre-season friendly is away to Exeter on Tuesday 15th July.

We host Swansea at Madejski Stadium on Saturday 2nd August, and the SkyBet Championship season begins away at Wigan one week later.
