Sammi and Samuel sink Staines

14 July 2014

U21s win first pre-season game

First half goals from Sammi Fridjonsson and Dominic Samuel were enough to hand our under-21s a first pre-season win on Saturday at Staines Town.

Our youngsters took on the Conference South side on a bright summer's day at Wheatsheaf Park, as they aimed to kick off their pre-season campaign with a win.

Martin Kuhl's men went ahead early on when Samuel's strike was intercepted by Icelandic youth international Fridjonsson, who coolly slotted home from close range after rounding the goalkeeper.

Four minutes before half time, Samuel turned from provider to goalscorer as finished well with his right foot after some excellent work from left back Shane Griffin.

Josh Ekim scored his first goal for Town as the hosts pulled one back just one minute before half time.

Kuhl changed the entire side for the second half, with every outfield player a second year scholar in the Academy.

Although no outfield Reading player was over the age of 18 after the interval, the Royals coped well with Town's more experienced players.

No goals were added in the second half, with our under-21s sealing a first friendly win of the pre-season.

First half Royals: Henly; Owusu, Griffin, Hyam, Cooper; Shaughnessy, Fridjonsson, L.Kelly; Vastsuk, Fosu; Samuel.

Second half Royals: Lincoln; Sheppard, McLennan, Dickie, Jules; Collins, Watson, Husin; Daniel Williams, Lawal; Cardwell.
