Samuel double beats Bognor

23 July 2014

Royals ease to 2-0 win

Reading's under-21s sealed a 2-0 victory away at Bognor Regis on Tuesday night thanks to a Dominic Samuel brace.

Both goals came in a dominant first half for the Royals, and were enough to seal a second pre-season victory.

Midfielder Conor Shaughnessy struck over the bar early on before Samuel was denied in the box by Rocks goalkeeper Chris Winterton.

But after 13 minutes, Martin Kuhl's men were ahead. Right back Nana Owusu cut inside and teed up Samuel for a good finish from close range.

Winger Tariqe Fosu, who played for the first team at Yeovil on Saturday, then cut across the area before firing a shot towards goal, but saw his effort well blocked before Liam Kelly saw an opportunity go over the bar.

And just three minutes before half time, Reading doubled their advantage. Sammi Fridjonsson made inroads down the left and squared to Samuel, who slotted the ball into the net.

Royals goalkeeper Dan Lincoln was called upon just before the whistle blew for the interval, as he intercepted a dangerous cross from Darren Wheeler.

Bognor saw their best chance of the game go astray when Charlie Oatway smashed the ball wide of the post after some good team play.

Kelly almost made it three for the Royals on the hour mark when his volley came back off the crossbar, before Samuel headed a good chance into the arms of Winterton.

The visitors had the ball in the net for the third time, but Fridjonsson's strike was disallowed for offside before the Icelander fired over shortly after.

The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 victory for Royals U21s, who take on Boreham Wood this Friday.
