Williams and Dean on Nike Trophy
Continuing our series of reaction pieces to the U14 Nike Trophy
win at Wembley last month, we hear from the two coaches who led the side on the day - Ryan Williams and Martin Dean.
"It's a fantastic achievement and great experience for the boys. This was a massive learning curve for them, that’s what it’s about for them at their age and what we aim for from the programme wegive them. To end it on a high like today is something they’ll remember this for the rest of their football careers. It’s a proud moment that epitomises the hard work that goes on behind the scenes within the Academy and at the club as a whole. Everyone was here today in the stands from a club and staff point of view. That’s what makes us special as a club. It epitomises Reading.
"I'm really excited for the players. We put them on this fast track journey from the qualifying stages at St George’s Park, there was a lot of hard work and a lot of hours. In some ways I've been surprised at just how they’ve applied some of the stuff we worked on and sowed seeds on. It’s a great credit to them at the age their at, because it’s not always that straight forward. Considering the money that Chelsea invest it’s great to see our boys compete against that and come out on top. It bodes well for the future. They chose sixteen elite clubs for this tournament and they based it on where clubs were positioned either in the Premier League or Championship. We were the last club to be picked out, anyone below us wouldn’t have got in – it makes it even more of a story and an achievement that we just about got in there and ended up like this."
