England captain backs Royals striker

Houghton lauds Kirby

England women's captain Steph Houghton has heaped praise on Reading striker Fran Kirby as she joins up with the national team for the very first time.

Kirby is away with the squad for two games against Belarus and Ukraine, and the Three Lionesses are on the verge of making next summer's World Cup in Canada.

Kirby has made a breathtaking start to Reading's first season in the new WSL2, and faced Man City's Houghton earlier this season as we narrowly lost to the Citizens.

Houghton said, “We played against Reading in The FA Women’s Cup and she was their best player. She likes to get into the box, she can use both feet and she caused us problems with her pace.

“Fran’s a bright talent and definitely one for the future.”

Steph is helping welcome Fran into the senior setup for the first time, saying, “It’s part of a captain’s role – and the more experienced players – to make the younger players fit into the squad straight away and feel welcome.

“It’s not just down to me, it’s down to the whole squad to make Fran feel welcome and I know they will do.

“I’m sure she will come in and enjoy every moment with us. It’s something that she will have dreamed about for a long, long time and now she’s got her place she’ll enjoy it.”
