International Update: Pearce's clean sheet

2 June 2014

Round up of latest action

Royals defender Alex Pearce kept a clean sheet against the might of Italy this past weekend, as he won his third cap for the Republic of Ireland.

Reading's Academy product played 90 minutes in the friendly at Craven Cottage, keeping quiet the likes of Fiorentina's prolific forward Giuseppe Rossi during the 0-0 stalemate.

The 25-year-old was also in the spotlight after a collision with Italy captain Riccardo Montolivo, which saw the midfielder stretchered off with an injury that puts doubt on his World Cup participation - though replays showed that no blame could really be placed on Pearce.

Elsewhere, Jordan Obita was an unused sub for Gareth Southgate's England U20s in their final game of the Toulon Tournament, a 1-0 defeat to Portugal, whilst young full back Sean Long captained Ireland U19s in a qualifying defeat to Serbia on Monday afternoon, with Liam Kelly an unused substitute. The result ended Ireland's hopes of heading to the European Championships in Hungary this summer.
