Kirby makes England cut

3 June 2014

Striker set to make international bow!

It has this afternoon been announced that Reading FC Women star strikerĀ Fran KirbyĀ has made the final 23-woman England squad that is set to take on Belarus and the Ukraine in World Cup qualifiers later this month.

England Women's Head Coach Mark Sampson had named Kirby in an initial 30-player squad for a World Cup qualifying double-header, our striker becoming the first player from FA WSL 2 to be called up by Sampson since the division launched in April.Ā

And Sampson included the Royals' goal-getter in his final cut when he announced it this afternoon.Ā Huge congratulations and lots of luck to Fran from all at Reading Football Club!

Kirby has been in outstanding form for the Royals, who scored aĀ hat-trick against DurhamĀ on Sunday and also scored in vital wins overĀ ArsenalĀ andĀ YeovilĀ earlier this season.

England travel to Belarus and Ukraine next month as part of their 2015 World Cup qualifying campaign. The Three Lions are top of Group 6, having won all six matches so far without conceding a goal. Last time out they beat Ukraine 4-0 in Shrewsbury.Ā

The first match, against Belarus, will take place on Saturday 14 June at Minskā€™s Traktor Stadium. England then travel to Ukraine, where they will play at Arena Lviv on Thursday 19 June.Ā
