Royals start at home to Newport

17 June 2014

First round draw made

The Royals have been handed a home draw for the first round of the Capital One Cup, and will play Newport County at home.

Nigel Adkins' men enter competition at the first round stage this year and were seeded, with the first tie split into north and south sections. The Royals were number 13 in the south section of the draw.

It is the first time that the Royals will play the 'new' Newport County, who were reformed in 1989. Before then, they two sides had met 90 times - with Reading winning 37, Newport claiming 30 victories with 23 draws between the two.

County were one of the clubs the Royals beat on the way to securing the record for the most consecutive wins from the start of a Football League campaign (13) - which is still in tact.

All Round 1 matches will be played during the week commencing 11th August 2014. The following teams will enter at the second round stage: Aston Villa, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Fulham Leicester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Norwich, Queens Park Rangers, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United.

Live broadcast slots have been identified for Monday 11th August and Wednesday 13th August and the matches will be selected in due course. The final is set to take place on Sunday 1st March 2015.

Ticket details will be released in due course.
