Academy coaches on Youth Cup heroics'The Reading spirit' and our 'never say die attitude' were emphasised again and again after Wednesday night's amazing FA Youth Cup comeback.
Speaking to Reading FC Player in the dressing room after the dramatic shoot-out victory over Liverpool, the coaches of our under-18s summed up an unfortgettable night.
Assistant Academy manager David Dodds: “Huge credit to the lads. Eamonn made what I would call a rousing 'Churchillian' speech, and that’s what got the lads really going and gave them a bit of belief at the end.” David Dodds
Coach of the Academy and Reading legend Michael Gilkes: “It was unreal. It was a fantastic occasion. Our whole ethos is ‘never give up’. That’s exactly what those guys have done tonight and we’re so pleased for them. For everyone connected to this club, it’s a great night.”
Academy Director Eamonn Dolan: “I’m really proud. Credit to Liverpool, they were magnificent. But we’ve not lost any of that Reading spirit, the same spirit from when Gilkesy played, through Steve Coppell and Alan Pardew and Brian McDermott eras to now. The never say die attitude was fantastic. It was a great night for us.”
